UK Graduate Job Vacancies Hit All-Time Low in July

Graduate job vacancies in the United Kingdom fell to an all-time low of 8,383 in July, marking a decline of approximately 45% compared to the previous year. Data from recruiting website Adzuna indicates this is the lowest level since tracking began in 2016, reversing a gradual recovery observed earlier in the spring.

The downturn occurs as a record 262,820 people prepare to enter university this September. Contributing factors include increased labor costs resulting from higher national insurance contributions and the minimum wage, alongside corporate shifts toward investing in artificial intelligence and automation over human recruitment.

While healthcare, nursing, hospitality, and logistics saw significant declines, growth persisted in teaching, travel, construction, and manufacturing. Geographically, the south-east of England was the only region to show positive annual vacancy growth, while Scotland and Northern Ireland experienced the steepest drops. The Office for National Statistics previously reported that approximately 1 million young people were not in education, employment, or training during the first quarter of the year.
