Hillingdon Council Removes 700 Dog Bins to Cut Costs

Hillingdon Council is removing 700 dedicated dog-waste bins to save up to £160,000, prompting backlash from residents and opposition councillors over sanitation concerns.

The Hillingdon London Borough Council is removing 700 dedicated dog-waste bins across the west London borough to reduce waste collection costs. The Conservative-run local authority estimates the move will save between £100,000 and £160,000, with approximately £60,000 of those savings earmarked for reinvestment into street cleaning.

Council officials state that dog owners should utilize the borough's 1,500 general litter bins. They argue this change streamlines cleansing services and more than doubles the existing capacity for waste disposal.

Opposition Labour councillors and local residents have criticized the decision, arguing that general bins lack the lids necessary to contain odors and prevent foxes from scavenging. Critics link the measure to the borough's financial instability, citing a £101.5 million schools grant deficit and annual debts increasing by £5.6 million. Opponents suggest the council should raise council tax, which has been frozen for several years, rather than removing essential services.
