UAE Launches LEONAV-1 Satellite for Navigation Technology

The National Space Science and Technology Center launched LEONAV-1, the first Emirati satellite dedicated to developing low Earth orbit navigation technologies.

The National Space Science and Technology Center at the United Arab Emirates University announced the successful launch of LEONAV-1 on July 9, 2026. As a CubeSat technology demonstrator, LEONAV-1 is the first Emirati satellite specifically dedicated to satellite navigation technologies.

Funded and supported by the UAE Space Agency, the mission represents the initial phase of a long-term strategy to establish a navigation system based on Low Earth Orbit. The satellite has entered the Launch and Early Orbit Phase to establish communications and verify system health.

Technical objectives for the mission include the transmission of GNSS-like signals within the S and L5/E5 frequency bands. Additionally, the center will assess the performance of onboard Orbit Determination and Time Synchronization software to improve the accuracy and resilience of future navigation services.
