India Approves ₹1,789 Crore AI Traffic System for Delhi

The Union Cabinet of India approved a ₹1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to address severe congestion in Delhi, where 7.1 million vehicles are currently registered. The project will be implemented by the Delhi Police over a 24-month period and will cover 42 traffic corridors across three phases.

The system utilizes AI-enabled adaptive traffic signals that adjust timings based on real-time conditions across 1,092 locations. To improve road safety, the ITMS will deploy automated enforcement at 1,029 locations to penalize speeding, red-light jumping, and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Infrastructure for the project includes integrated command-and-control centers, variable message signs for commuters, and priority routing for emergency vehicles. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing will provide technical support, monitoring, and validation as the project management consultant.
