Piyush Goyal Urges Indian Researchers in Germany to Return Home
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal called for stronger industry-academia partnerships to attract overseas Indian scientists and engineers back to India during a visit to Berlin.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal advocated for the creation of an enabling ecosystem to encourage Indian scientists, engineers, and researchers working abroad to return to India. Speaking to research students in Berlin on October 24, Goyal stated that providing necessary support and a strong research environment are as critical as financial incentives for attracting talent.
Goyal identified semiconductors, quantum computing, power electronics, smart manufacturing, and agriculture as primary areas for collaboration. He noted that German companies are increasingly viewing India as a partner for research, development, and manufacturing rather than solely as a consumer market. He suggested that combining German precision and research with Indian scale and talent would drive innovation toward India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
During his visit, Goyal emphasized the need for stronger partnerships between industry, academia, and research institutions, citing the Fraunhofer institutes as an example of a successful large-scale research ecosystem. Following his engagements in Germany, the minister is scheduled to visit the Netherlands.
