UAE Police Detain Binance Employees During Financial Crime Inquiries

United Arab Emirates police detained and questioned two Binance employees during fraud investigations into third-party fund flows before releasing them.

Police in the United Arab Emirates recently detained two employees of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance at airports during inquiries into possible financial crimes on the platform. A leader of the company's Dubai-based subsidiary was questioned in July, and a midlevel staff member was held overnight in Sharjah this month.

Binance officials expressed concern over employee safety, informing the Emirati government that the workers were swept up in fraud inquiries focused on customers. A company spokesperson stated that the personnel provided statements regarding third-party fund flows and were promptly cleared and released.

These detentions occur as Binance expands its presence in the region. The exchange recently acquired operating licenses in Abu Dhabi and received a $2 billion investment from MGX, a state-backed Emirati venture fund, in March 2025. The incidents follow a history of global regulatory scrutiny and anti-money-laundering failures for the exchange.
