Morocco Reports 38.02% Turnout in Legislative Elections

The Ministry of the Interior of Morocco reported a national voter turnout of 38.02% for the legislative elections held on September 23, 2026. This figure marks a significant decline from the 50.35% turnout recorded in 2021. Approximately 15.8 million registered voters cast ballots for 7,288 candidates competing for 395 seats in the House of Representatives.

While national turnout dropped, international observers from France and El Salvador reported high civic mobilization in Laayoune. To facilitate the vote in that city, authorities established 273 polling stations and 34 central offices. The Special Commission for the Accreditation of Election Observers accredited 3,006 monitors from 30 international bodies and 26 non-governmental associations to ensure an impartial process.

The incoming government will manage a $20-billion infrastructure program to prepare for the 2030 World Cup and address youth discontent. Major contenders for the House of Representatives include the National Rally of Independents, the Authenticity and Modernity Party, and the Istiqlal Party. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, who has led the government since 2021, did not stand for re-election after stepping down as leader of the National Rally of Independents. King Mohammed VI retains the authority to appoint the new prime minister from the winning party.
