Gavin Baker Claims AI Data Centers Revitalize Small Towns

Managing partner Gavin Baker argues that the expansion of AI data centers is revitalizing dying small towns across the United States. Speaking on The A16z Show, Baker stated that the AI boom provides high-paying opportunities for electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians, which makes college degrees less financially attractive for some young people.

Baker claims the industry is effectively re-industrializing America and urged companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta to better communicate these social benefits to solve a branding problem. He described the trend as potentially the best thing to happen to working-class Americans.

Additionally, Baker alleged that opposition to data center development is fueled by an organized campaign funded by the Chinese Communist Party and spread via TikTok. This claim follows reports from the social media platform X, which identified a bot farm of 200,000 Chinese accounts posting about data centers, though some researchers noted these bots failed to generate significant engagement.
