Amazon Cuts Artificial General Intelligence Unit Jobs

Amazon.com, Inc. reduced its workforce within its artificial general intelligence (AGI) organization on July 22, 2026, as part of a strategy to prioritize high-value AI initiatives. While the company did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, internal reports indicated that staff under Vice Presidents Adeeb Shanaa and Vishal Sharma were impacted. The cuts are designed to streamline operations and accelerate the development of large AI models, such as the Amazon Nova and Amazon Titan families.

This restructuring follows significant leadership turnover, including the departures of former AGI executive Rohit Prasad and AGI Lab head David Luan. In December, Amazon consolidated its AGI operations under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis, who also oversees silicon development and quantum computing. These reductions contribute to a broader trend of corporate downsizing, following waves of 14,000 job cuts in October 2025 and 16,000 in January 2026.

Impacted employees based in the United States will receive 90 days of pay and benefits, along with severance eligibility and outplacement job search support. The company maintains that building large-scale AI models remains one of its most important ongoing projects.
