Avalara Research Finds Finance Leaders Prioritize AI Speed Over Governance

Avalara reports that global finance leaders are prioritizing rapid AI agent deployment over governance due to intense career pressure to demonstrate return on investment.

Research released by Avalara, Inc. titled "Agents of Change" reveals a critical gap between the rapid adoption of AI agents and the establishment of financial governance. A survey of over 1,500 CFOs and senior finance leaders across the United States, United Kingdom, India, and Australia shows that 92% of respondents feel career pressure to demonstrate AI return on investment, while only 7% prioritize governance over deployment speed.

Regional data highlights varying degrees of risk. In India, 71% of leaders focus on rapid deployment, with 27% stating that accountability for significant AI errors is unclear or nonexistent—the highest proportion among surveyed markets. In Australia, 88% feel pressure to prove returns, and 75% lack the in-house expertise to understand how their AI agents function. Only 12% of Australian leaders prioritize governance over pace.

Industry experts warn that this imbalance creates systemic risks. The report indicates that 75-76% of leaders rely on external vendors or IT teams to interpret AI functions. To mitigate these gaps, finance leaders are now seeking comprehensive audit trails, human review for high-risk actions, and the integration of AI within existing systems of record to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance.
