Pakistan Mediates Military Standoff Between United States and Iran

The Government of Pakistan is leading mediation efforts to resolve a military standoff between the United States and Iran. These diplomatic initiatives follow the collapse of a mid-June memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

As part of the de-escalation process, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Tehran on August 14 to discuss reducing regional tensions. This was followed by a visit from Field Marshal Asim Munir on August 24, who traveled to the Iranian capital to seek a negotiated settlement.

Pakistani officials have clarified the nature of these missions. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi rejected assertions that Munir acted as a U.S. envoy, maintaining the visit was a sovereign Pakistani mediation effort. Separately, the Foreign Office indicated that while Pakistan remains open to dialogue with Afghanistan, any such talks require the Afghan Taliban to provide evidence of counterterrorism measures and ensure Afghan soil is not used by proxies such as the Baloch Liberation Army or the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
