USCIS Screens Immigration Applicants for Anti-American Social Media Activity

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is screening the social media accounts of legal immigration applicants to identify anti-American views and activities. This process follows a Trump administration directive from August instructing the agency to treat such views as an overwhelmingly negative factor that could justify the denial of immigration benefits.

Director Joseph Edlow stated that the vetting specifically targets individuals who support the violent overthrow of the United States or provide material support to terrorist organizations, including Hamas. While Edlow maintains that social media activity is not the sole deciding factor in application decisions, he asserted that the agency is moving away from being a rubber-stamping agency.

Beyond social media screening, the administration is expanding the civics test, increasing inquiries into the good moral character of applicants, and reviving neighborhood checks through investigator interviews. Critics argue these measures weaponize immigration law to punish protected speech.

In a related effort to monitor foreign nationals, the United States Department of State recently revoked visas for individuals who allegedly celebrated the death of activist Charlie Kirk.
