Kano Governor Appoints Acting Anti-Corruption Chief After Chairman Resigns

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf appointed Barrister Hafsat Ada’u Kutama as the Acting Chairperson of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) on September 16, 2026. The appointment follows the resignation of the previous chairman, Saidu Yahaya, on September 15.

Yahaya stepped down after facing pressure from the state government and public criticism from Governor Yusuf, who cited a failure to meet performance expectations in the fight against corruption. Yusuf previously stated that anyone unwilling to discharge the responsibility should "step aside."

The leadership transition occurs amid broader concerns regarding the effectiveness of the state's anti-graft machinery. In a move to ensure transparency during the distribution of 150 truckloads of subsidized fertilizer across 44 local government areas, Governor Yusuf bypassed the PCACC entirely. He instead invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to monitor the distribution process.
