Ukraine Analysis Finds Sanction-Busting Electronics in North Korean Missiles

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense reports that North Korean missiles used by Russia contain civilian-grade electronics and outdated technology to bypass international sanctions.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine released a forensic analysis of North Korean KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles recovered from Russian strikes conducted in early 2024. The findings reveal that while these weapons are refinements of early Russian Iskander models, they are not direct copies and instead combine foreign technology with unique North Korean designs.

Ukrainian engineers noted significant technical deficiencies in the missiles, including outdated production methods and soldering quality comparable to technology from 50 years ago. To maintain range, the missiles utilize less energy-efficient fuel and engines that are 50% larger than Russian counterparts, while using graphite tips as a low-cost heat protection measure.

The analysis highlighted that the control units contain civilian-grade electronics from leading global brands. The Ministry of Defense concluded that Pyongyang purchased these specific components to circumvent international sanctions.
