Lifezone Metals Selects Orion CMC for Tanzania Nickel Project
Lifezone Metals selected the US-backed Orion CMC consortium as the preferred partner for a strategic equity investment in the Kabanga nickel project in Tanzania.
Lifezone Metals Ltd. selected Orion CMC as the preferred partner for a strategic equity investment in the Kabanga nickel project in Tanzania. The consortium, led by Orion Resource Partners LP, is backed by the US International Development Finance Corp. and Abu Dhabi’s L’imad Holding.
The project is part of a broader US strategy under the Trump administration to secure critical minerals and reduce dependence on China for stainless steel and electric-vehicle battery materials. The Kabanga deposit is projected to produce 350,000 tons of nickel concentrate annually, with development costs estimated at $940 million.
The Government of Tanzania currently holds a 16% stake in the project. A final investment decision is expected early next year, pending the outcome of ongoing negotiations between the mining company and the Tanzanian government.
