Istanbul Airport Becomes World's Most Connected Aviation Hub

Istanbul Airport has overtaken London Heathrow to become the world's most internationally connected airport for 2026. According to the Megahubs 2026 report by OAG, Istanbul now leads with connections to 337 global destinations, driven by the aggressive network expansion of Turkish Airlines, which operates approximately 80% of the airport's flights.

London Heathrow fell to second place following a 6% year-over-year decline in potential connections on its busiest day. OAG attributed this dip, along with ranking drops for Dubai and Doha, to ongoing disruptions in Middle East schedules. Regional capacity in August 2026 was 5.7% lower than the previous year. Amsterdam Schiphol currently ranks third globally.

The report, based on data from the 100 largest airports for the year ending August 2026, also noted a surge in Asia-Pacific hubs, which now hold eight of the top 20 spots. Kuala Lumpur International Airport retained fourth place globally and took the top spot in the Low-Cost Carrier Megahubs Index. In the Americas, Chicago O'Hare rose to fifth place.

Selahattin Bilgen, CEO of IGA, stated that the airport was designed for future expansion and that the achievement reflects Istanbul's unique geographical position. OAG analysts noted that the 2026 rankings reflect a global aviation landscape still recalibrating after significant disruption, while suggesting China may have finally shaken off the residual effects of the pandemic.
