U.S. AI and Defense Tech Funding Reach Record Highs
U.S. artificial intelligence and defense-technology startups secured record-breaking venture capital funding through 2025, signaling a shift toward large-scale manufacturing and execution in 2026.
The U.S. artificial intelligence and defense-technology sectors experienced unprecedented growth through 2025, characterized by massive funding rounds and strategic acquisitions. In the general AI sector, 55 startups secured funding rounds of $100 million or more. OpenAI led this trend with a record-breaking $40 billion round in March 2025, reaching a $300 billion valuation, while Anthropic raised two rounds exceeding $1 billion, including a $13 billion Series F in September.
Parallel growth occurred in defense technology, where venture capital deal values climbed to $49.1 billion, up from $27.2 billion in 2024. This surge was driven by a focus on autonomous systems and battlefield AI, with U.S. equity funding nearly tripling to $14.2 billion. Major capital injections supported companies such as Anduril Industries, which raised $2.5 billion in June, and Saronic. The period also saw record exits totaling $54.4 billion, most notably Nvidia Corporation's €20 billion acquisition of Groq.
Early 2026 indicators show continued momentum. Elon Musk's xAI announced a $20 billion Series E round, and Sam Altman's brain-computer interface startup, Merge Labs, secured a $250 million seed round led by OpenAI. Market analysts expect the focus for 2026 to shift from invention to execution, as startups work to translate this capital into large-scale manufacturing and overcome supply-chain constraints.
