Travelodge CEO Apologizes After Review Finds Fundamental Security Failures
Travelodge Interim CEO Ray Reidy apologized after an independent review found the hotel chain fundamentally failed a guest who was sexually assaulted in 2022.
An independent review conducted by Paul Greaney KC found that Travelodge fundamentally failed a guest, referred to as Lily, who was sexually assaulted in December 2022 at a hotel in Maidenhead, Berkshire. The assault occurred after a man, Kyran Smith, was given a key card to the victim's room. Smith was jailed in February for seven-and-a-half years.
The review characterized the company's treatment of the victim as disgraceful and noted that the case highlighted security flaws across the broader hotel sector. Former CEO Jo Boydell stepped down in August following criticism of her handling of the incident and safety concerns.
Interim CEO Ray Reidy apologized unreservedly for the failures and stated the company is dedicating significant resources to overhaul governance and security. Travelodge has since implemented new policies prohibiting the confirmation of guest stays to third parties and requiring explicit guest permission before issuing replacement keys.
