Domestic Investors Drive Nigerian Stock Market Rally in 2026
Domestic investors fueled a massive rally in the Nigerian equities market, pushing the All-Share Index to become one of the world's top performers in dollar terms.
The Nigerian Exchange Limited All-Share Index emerged as one of the world's top-performing equity indices in dollar terms during 2026, reaching a peak year-to-date growth of 67% by July 10. This rally was driven primarily by domestic investors, who accounted for 89.21% of all trading in the first seven months of the year, totaling N10.68 trillion in transactions. Foreign participation conversely fell to 10.79%.
Growth was supported by increased participation from retail investors and pension funds following threshold changes by the National Pension Commission, as well as the mobilization of N4.65 trillion in fresh equity to recapitalize 33 deposit money banks. While some critics suggested the growth was a mirage caused by currency devaluation, data shows the naira appreciated roughly 4% against the dollar in 2026.
Despite the surge, the market experienced a correction in August, falling for eight consecutive sessions as investors raised cash for primary listings, including the Dangote refinery offering. S&P Dow Jones Indices has placed Nigeria on its 2027 watchlist for a possible upgrade to frontier status, though FTSE Russell remains cautious due to concerns over market accessibility and repatriation reliability. Analysts note that these financial gains have not yet translated into improved infrastructure or employment for the general population.
