Democratic Socialists of America Propose Overhaul of U.S. Government

The Democratic Socialists of America published a platform detailing a fundamental restructuring of the United States government and economy. The proposed agenda seeks to eliminate the U.S. Senate and abolish the Electoral College, while replacing the president and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary subordinate to Congress. The organization also calls for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the emptying of prisons.

Economic goals in the platform include the public ownership of large corporations and essential industries, aggressive wealth taxes, and the provision of free housing and healthcare for all. The group asserts that essential services such as medicine, energy, and transportation should function as common goods rather than for-profit businesses.

Critics, including columnist Cal Thomas, have characterized the organization as a domestic enemy of the Constitution. Thomas argues that the goals mirror the Communist Manifesto and would lead to shared poverty and the loss of constitutional rights, citing economic failures in Cuba as a precedent. He has called on members of both political parties to fight the influence of the organization to preserve constitutional protections.
