EU Raises Red Sea Naval Alert After Houthi Gains

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas raised the alert level for vessels participating in Operation Aspides, the EU's naval mission in the Red Sea. The decision follows a worsening security situation caused by Houthi forces expanding their control over strategic locations near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, including Perim Island and the Greater and Lesser Hanish islands.

These territorial gains have enhanced the Houthis' surveillance and targeting capabilities, increasing risks and costs for shipping firms and insurers. While the Bab al-Mandab remains open to commercial shipping, Kallas condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, stating they are "unacceptable and sabotage the global economy."

To address the escalation, Kallas consulted with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud. The officials discussed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Yemen and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
