VEDA Postpones Lahore Metro Bus Shutdown After Fuel Dispute

The private operator VEDA postponed a planned shutdown of the 27-kilometer Gajjumata-Shahdara Lahore Metro Bus route scheduled for August 11, 2026. The company had threatened to halt operations after claiming it exhausted its financial resources due to rising diesel prices and a reimbursement formula that failed to cover full fuel expenses.

The dispute centered on a July 29 court order requiring the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA) to provide fuel from its own sources. VEDA demanded compliance with this order, while the PMA challenged the verdict and argued it could not implement the fuel provisions without approval from the provincial government. The PMA characterized VEDA's threat as an attempt to "blackmail and pressure the government."

To prepare for a potential collapse of service affecting up to 220,000 daily passengers, the PMA arranged alternative buses from outside the existing system. While last-minute negotiations prevented the August 11 shutdown and kept buses on their regular schedule, the underlying financial conflict remains unresolved. VEDA has reserved its legal and arbitration rights should further disruptions occur.
