Florida Grand Jury Finds DeSantis Administration Misappropriated $10 Million

A Florida state grand jury found that the administration of Ron DeSantis misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer funds from a $67 million Medicaid settlement with Centene Corporation. The funds, originally intended to provide health insurance for underprivileged children, were instead diverted to the Hope Florida Foundation, a nonprofit led by First Lady Casey DeSantis. From there, the money was routed through organizations including Save Our Society from Drugs and Secure Florida's Future into political action committees and the Republican Party of Florida.

The grand jury described the transfer as a "sophisticated scheme" and a "political scheme" used to campaign against 2024 ballot initiatives regarding recreational marijuana and abortion rights. The report identified James Uthmeier, the current Attorney General and former Chief of Staff to the governor, as a central figure who directed funds toward his own PAC, Keep Florida Clean. The investigation also concluded that former Attorney General Ashley Moody authorized the settlement agreement and was aware of the plan.

Despite finding that taxpayer money was "plainly used for political purposes," the grand jury declined to bring criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence to identify which specific officials took responsibility for the decision. The jury recommended that the legislature enact laws to prevent future misappropriations. Governor DeSantis has dismissed the findings as a "hoax," while other officials characterized the allegations as a "baseless smear."
