Apple Music to Label AI-Generated Content Later This Year
Apple Music will introduce visible Made With AI labels to identify content primarily derived from generative AI services starting later this year.
Apple will introduce visible Made With AI labels on its music streaming service later this year to identify content primarily derived from generative AI. This initiative expands on transparency requirements established in March, which mandate that record labels, distributors, and content providers include AI transparency tags for tracks, compositions, artwork, and music videos where AI created a material portion of the work.
The company distinguishes between fundamentally AI-generated tracks and those using AI-assisted production tools, such as mastering or EQ, which may not require the label. Apple Music lead Oliver Schusser stated that while over a third of monthly uploads are fully AI-generated, these tracks account for less than 0.5% of total listening.
Other streaming platforms have adopted different strategies, with Spotify and Deezer excluding fully AI-generated tracks from algorithmic and editorial recommendations. SAG-AFTRA praised the push for transparency, while major labels including Sony, Universal, and Warner Music are pursuing infringement cases against AI music companies Suno and Udio.
