Volkswagen Plans 100,000 Job Cuts to Reduce Costs

Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume and VW brand chief Thomas Schäfer are presenting a restructuring plan at the company's main factory in Wolfsburg on Tuesday. The proposal seeks to eliminate up to 100,000 jobs and reduce costs by at least 10 billion euros to raise margins to 9%. These measures aim to counter declining sales in China, high operating expenses in Germany, and intensifying competition in software and electric mobility.

The plan has faced immediate opposition from labor leaders. IG Metall chief Christiane Benner described the company's targets as "cloud cuckoo land," and local unionists have threatened strikes in response to the potential layoffs.

Due to the company's governance structure, Blume must obtain approval from the state of Lower Saxony and powerful labor representatives. Meanwhile, Porsche SE has pressured management to accelerate the process, warning that the automaker is at a "historic crossroads" as falling profits impact dividends for the controlling Porsche-Piëch family.
