Chinese Yunnan Coffee Beans Gain Traction in Vietnam
Specialty coffee roasters in Vietnam are seeing increased demand for beans from China's Yunnan province due to improved quality and logistical advantages.
Coffee beans from China's Yunnan province are seeing increased adoption among specialty coffee consumers and roasters in Vietnam. In cities such as Hanoi and Hai Phong, cafes report rising demand driven by improving harvest quality and a variety of processing methods, including washed, natural, honey, and anaerobic fermentation. These techniques produce diverse flavor profiles with notes of watermelon, peach, rose, mild wine, and tea.
Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc, owner of the Unbranded. café and roastery in Hai Phong, began selling the beans in July 2024 and reports that Yunnan beans now account for 20 to 30 percent of customer selections. Industry specialists attribute the growth to the proximity of China to Vietnam, which provides significant logistical and pricing advantages over other imports.
While the current trend is limited to the niche specialty coffee market, experts suggest that continued quality improvements could allow Yunnan beans to expand their reach to a broader consumer base across Vietnam.
