BRICS Summit Promotes Diversified Global Financial Architecture

BRICS leaders convened in New Delhi to develop a financial framework that increases sovereignty for the Global South through national currency trade and BRICS Pay.

The BRICS intergovernmental organization convened the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi to establish a diversified global financial architecture. The framework aims to increase financial sovereignty for the Global South by creating alternatives to the U.S. dollar rather than replacing it entirely. Key initiatives include the expanded use of national currencies for intra-BRICS trade and the implementation of BRICS Pay, a cross-border payment system designed to improve interoperability between national financial systems.

The New Development Bank serves as the institutional pillar of these efforts, providing financing for sustainable development and infrastructure under a governance structure based on equal shareholding. These measures are intended to shield developing economies from external financial shocks and the volatility of U.S. monetary policy.

Specifically, the group seeks to reduce vulnerability to interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve System, which typically increase debt-servicing costs for nations holding debt denominated in U.S. dollars.
