India's Power Chief Urges AI Integration for Grid Reliability

Ghanshyam Prasad calls for AI adoption and indigenous innovation to improve forecasting, prevent equipment failure, and reduce distribution losses across India's electricity value chain.

Central Electricity Authority Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad announced that artificial intelligence can enhance forecasting, decision-making, asset utilization, and grid reliability across the electricity value chain in India. Speaking at the Making the Indian Power Sector AI Enabled event, Prasad detailed how AI-enabled vibration analysis and thermal monitoring can prevent equipment failures, while smart meter analytics can improve load forecasting and consumer services.

Prasad emphasized that AI should serve as a tool to solve practical problems, such as integrating renewable energy and reducing distribution losses, rather than being an end in itself. He argued that AI allows the sector to move from responding to problems after they occur to anticipating and preventing them.

To achieve these goals, Prasad called for collaboration between industry partners, research organizations, and educational institutions. He specifically urged support for startups and young innovators to develop indigenous solutions, stating that India's ambition should be to create technology that can eventually serve global markets.
