Elon Musk Warns G20 of AI Power Shortfall

Elon Musk warned G20 leaders on September 1, 2026, that electricity has become the primary binding constraint on the growth of artificial intelligence. He stated that a power crisis is already unfolding, citing a consensus estimate of at least a 15 gigawatt power shortfall for AI chips by 2027.

Musk noted that while AI chip production is increasing by approximately 40% to 50%, existing grid infrastructure cannot keep pace with the accelerating demand. He indicated that this gap will arrive before infrastructure timelines can be closed.

Because of this projected deficit, Musk emphasized the critical importance of power producers, grid builders, and turbine manufacturers in preventing a systemic bottleneck for AI development.
