Labour Party Proposes Aviation Reforms to Lower Flight Costs

The New Zealand Labour Party announced a plan to mandate transparent airfares, automatic refunds, and fairer airport access for smaller regional airlines.

The New Zealand Labour Party announced a policy to reform the aviation sector by mandating that airlines display all-in, real-time pricing to allow customers to compare the true cost of flights. The proposal includes requirements for automatic refunds for cancelled or significantly changed flights, as well as compensation for undelivered paid services or significantly delayed checked baggage.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins stated the policy addresses the cost-of-living crisis and the lack of competition on regional routes. To foster this competition, the party intends to ensure smaller airlines have fairer access to essential airport infrastructure. The plan also requires airlines to publicly report performance data regarding cancellations, delays, and baggage handling.

Labour commerce and consumer affairs spokesperson Arena Williams criticized the National Party's approach to the sector. While the government offered $5.7 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to help regional airlines manage operating costs, Williams argued that providing cash subsidies without removing structural barriers to competition is insufficient for long-term growth and passenger choice.
