Pakistan Pursues Diplomacy to Resolve US-Iran Conflict

The Government of Pakistan is pursuing diplomatic efforts to resolve a conflict between the United States and Iran following a series of retaliatory strikes. Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a 14-point interim framework established on June 18, remains a viable pathway to return both nations to negotiations.

As part of these efforts, Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Tehran to discuss regional de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. These diplomatic moves coincide with broader regional security initiatives, including the August 31 inaugural meeting of the Strategic, Political and Defence Committee in Istanbul. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye agreed to establish a secretariat in Saudi Arabia, led by a Pakistani secretary-general, to improve collective deterrence and defense industry cooperation under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

In a separate legal development, the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding, rejecting an attempt by India to place the agreement in abeyance.
