Meloni Coalition Wins Calabria By-Election Over Far-Right Rival
Italy's ruling coalition secured 53% of the vote in a Calabria by-election, limiting the growth of Roberto Vannacci's National Future party.
The ruling coalition of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni won a by-election in the southern region of Calabria on Monday, securing approximately 53% of the vote. The result serves as a key test for the government against Roberto Vannacci and his far-right party, National Future, which saw its nominee secure only about 10% of the vote in Reggio Calabria.
The center-left candidate improved upon 2022 results by receiving roughly 35% of the vote, though overall voter turnout dropped sharply to 22% from 49.4% four years ago. Roberto Occhiuto, the Governor of Calabria and deputy leader of Forza Italia, characterized the result as a landslide victory.
Despite the win, the result has sparked internal debate regarding future strategy. While some pollsters suggest an alliance with Vannacci could help Meloni maintain power in next year's general election, Forza Italia lawmaker Matilde Siracusano warned that such a pact would create serious problems for the coalition.
