Reserve Bank of New Zealand Restructures After Karen Silk Resigns

Reserve Bank of New Zealand Governor Anna Breman is restructuring the executive leadership team following the mid-December resignation of Assistant Governor Karen Silk.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand will restructure its executive leadership team following the resignation of Assistant Governor Money Karen Silk. Silk is scheduled to depart in mid-December 2026, five months before her term on the Monetary Policy Committee was set to expire in May 2027.

Governor Anna Breman is utilizing the vacancy to replace Silk's role with two new positions: Assistant Governor Monetary Policy and Assistant Governor Payments and Cash. The bank also intends to establish a Chief of Staff role, with funding provided through the 2025-2030 Five-Year Funding Agreement. Breman stated that these changes maintain clear leadership of core functions while positioning the bank for the future.

Silk will attend two final Monetary Policy Committee meetings on October 28 and December 9 to ensure continuity. Her departure leaves two internal staff vacancies on the seven-member committee. Because of a convention against making significant appointments within three months of an election, permanent replacements will not be named before the November 7 election, though the bank is seeking an interim appointment.
