New Zealand Warships Transit Taiwan Strait Amid Chinese Protest

The New Zealand Defence Force deployed the naval frigate HMNZS Te Mana and the replenishment ship HMNZS Aotearoa through the Taiwan Strait on September 18. The transit was part of a three-month Indo-Pacific deployment intended to demonstrate New Zealand's commitment to the region. New Zealand officials stated the movement was conducted in international waters under international law.

The People's Liberation Army Navy tracked and monitored the vessels throughout their passage. The Government of China criticized the action as "playing with fire" regarding its core interests and accused New Zealand of acting as a pawn for external powers. This follows a November 2025 transit by the Aotearoa, during which Chinese forces reportedly conducted simulated attacks with aircraft.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated he did not expect backlash from China, which remains New Zealand's largest trading partner. The transit occurred amid long-standing disputes over the waterway, as China claims sovereignty and jurisdiction over the strait while other nations maintain it is an international waterway.
