India Legally Authorizes 100 Percent Ethanol Vehicular Fuel

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari approved a regulatory framework to legally authorize 100 percent ethanol (E100) as a vehicular fuel in June 2026. The move establishes a legal basis for automakers, fuel retailers, and testing agencies to deploy pure ethanol-powered mobility solutions, shifting India's strategy from blending to standalone fuel options.

Gadkari stated that the initiative aims to reduce India's fossil fuel import burden, currently estimated at Rs 22 lakh crore, and lower the country's dependence on imported crude oil, which accounts for over 85 percent of its requirements. The government also expects the transition to boost the rural economy by increasing demand for maize and sugarcane.

Industry adoption is already underway, with Maruti Suzuki launching a flex-fuel WagonR and Hero MotoCorp introducing two ethanol-powered motorcycles. Gadkari predicted that Toyota, Suzuki, and Hyundai will release vehicles running entirely on ethanol within the next six weeks. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri noted that the government recently introduced E85 fuel and achieved its 20 percent ethanol blending target in 2024, six years ahead of the 2030 goal. Large-scale adoption now depends on the rollout of dedicated E100 dispensing stations and updated infrastructure.
