US DOT Approves Warning Beacons for Autonomous Trucks
The U.S. Department of Transportation granted a five-year exemption allowing driverless trucks to use mounted beacons instead of manual reflective warning triangles.
The U.S. Department of Transportation approved a five-year exemption on Wednesday allowing autonomous trucking companies to use vehicle-mounted warning beacons instead of manually placing reflective warning triangles around stopped vehicles.
The decision resolves a significant regulatory hurdle for fully driverless operations, as these vehicles lack human operators to deploy traditional roadside safety equipment. The exemption follows a joint request submitted in 2023 by Aurora and Waymo, the self-driving unit of Alphabet.
By permitting cab-mounted beacons to alert other motorists, the federal government provides the regulatory flexibility necessary to support the commercial deployment and testing of self-driving long-haul freight operations across the United States.
