AI Leaders Drive Projected 31% S&P 500 Earnings Surge

U.S. companies are projected to see a 31% year-over-year earnings increase for the third quarter, primarily driven by artificial intelligence and semiconductor growth.

Refinitiv Limited projects that S&P 500 earnings will rise approximately 31% year-over-year for the third quarter. Technology companies and artificial intelligence leaders, including Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com, and Meta Platforms Incorporated, are expected to drive two-thirds of this overall growth.

Semiconductor companies are forecast to see a 136% increase in earnings. In the energy sector, earnings are projected to grow by 115% due to oil price surges linked to the US-Israeli war with Iran. In contrast, sectors unrelated to AI, such as consumer staples and real estate, show the weakest growth estimates.

Market strategists warn that earnings growth may be peaking as investors increase scrutiny over AI capital expenditures. The earnings season begins next week with reports from major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs.
