Adidas Lays Off Technology Staff at India Hub

Adidas announced layoffs at its India Technology Hub in Gurugram during a town hall meeting on September 15, 2026. The company stated the workforce reduction is a difficult decision intended to simplify the organization and align its operating model with a rapidly evolving business and technology environment.

The cuts primarily target software engineers, data scientists, and data engineers. Affected employees were divided into two groups: those who received immediate exit letters and those required to stay until December 15 to complete handovers to other global tech hubs.

Reports conflict regarding the scale of the reductions. Adidas officially claims the impact is less than 20% of its technology operations workforce, which would be approximately 180 employees. However, other reports suggest the cuts are more severe, impacting between 300 and 350 employees, or nearly 50% of the hub's 700-person staff.

Despite the restructuring, the company maintains that India remains a strategically important market. This move follows a broader trend of technology layoffs in India driven by AI and automation, which have also affected firms such as Oracle and PayPal.
