Israel Intensifies Military Incursions and Fortifications in Southern Syria
The Military of Israel conducted ground incursions and shelling in Quneitra province while building fortifications in the Golan Heights buffer zone.
The Military of Israel conducted a series of ground incursions and artillery strikes in Syria's southern Quneitra province on October 8, 2026. Two Israeli tanks and more than 15 military vehicles entered the village of eastern Samadaniyah and advanced toward Tal Krum, while artillery targeted the vicinity of Sweisa village. These actions followed shelling of agricultural areas around Al-Samdaniya Al-Sharqiya on Wednesday.
Simultaneously, Israeli forces have intensified the construction of trenches, berms, and observation posts within the UN-patrolled buffer zone of the Golan Heights. Syrian officials report these fortifications extend up to one kilometer beyond the ceasefire line established by the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, Israel has established a security zone in the south and conducted hundreds of strikes. This period of instability has seen 56 people seized by Israeli forces, including the killing of 22-year-old Mohammad Dabbour, whom the army described as a "suspect attempting to infiltrate" a military post.
The Government of Syria has condemned the construction as a "flagrant breach" of the 1974 agreement and demanded the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces. While Damascus reaffirms its commitment to the disengagement terms, Israel has previously declared the agreement no longer in effect. Despite the escalating military activity, the two nations have engaged in several rounds of direct talks to reach a security agreement.
