Italy Summons Refiners to Boost Fuel Production Amid Price Spikes
The Italian government scheduled a meeting with refining executives for October 8 to increase domestic fuel production following a surge in gasoline and diesel prices.
Industry Minister Adolfo Urso and Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin have scheduled a meeting for October 8 with refining industry executives to discuss increasing domestic diesel and gasoline production. The initiative follows a surge in fuel prices, with gasoline averaging 2.14 euros per liter.
The Government of Italy attributes the price spike to a global diesel crunch and constrained refinery capacity resulting from Iranian strikes in the Middle East and Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries. To mitigate these costs for citizens, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's administration has spent approximately 3 billion euros this year on tax and excise duty cuts.
These high fuel costs have coincided with a shift in consumer behavior across the continent. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association reported a 52.2% year-over-year increase in battery electric vehicle sales across Europe in August.
