Hong Kong Fire Probe Report Due Thursday

Chief Executive John Lee will receive a final report Thursday on the Wang Fuk Court fire that killed 168 people in Tai Po.

An independent committee led by High Court Judge David Loke will submit its final report on Thursday, October 22, to John Lee, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. The investigation focuses on a residential fire at the Wang Fuk Court estate in Tai Po last November that killed 168 people. The blaze engulfed seven of the eight towers and was likely caused by a discarded cigarette butt that ignited combustible materials during renovations.

The report is expected to mirror findings from lead counsel Victor Dawes, who argued that the government bears a share of responsibility for the regulatory framework that allowed the disaster, though private contractors hold primary responsibility. In response to the impending findings, John Lee has pledged to implement comprehensive reforms and pursue accountability.

Authorities have already charged two companies and seven individuals with conspiracy to defraud and manslaughter. A redacted version of the committee's report may be released to the public next week.
