AIADMK and AMMK Align for Tamil Nadu By-Elections

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) have aligned to contest upcoming Assembly by-elections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies on October 6. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed confidence in winning the seats, which became vacant after legislators K. Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama resigned to join Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The TVK has fielded both former legislators as candidates, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has also nominated candidates for both seats.

On September 15, AMMK General Secretary T T V Dhinakaran announced his party's support for AIADMK candidates. This alliance coincides with intensifying criticism of the TVK government's first 100 days in office. Both Palaniswami and Dhinakaran demanded full disclosure regarding Chief Minister Vijay's recent investment trip to London.

Further grievances raised by the opposition include unannounced power cuts across Tamil Nadu and environmental concerns regarding a proposed new Secretariat at Pattinapakkam. Dhinakaran specifically called for the project's cancellation, citing opposition from local fishermen. The by-elections serve as a critical test of AIADMK's organizational strength following the defection of six legislators to the ruling TVK.
