RMT Strike and Engineering Works Disrupt London Rail Travel

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has called for strike action on Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, leading East Midlands Railway (EMR) to implement a significantly reduced timetable. The dispute centers on safety concerns regarding Class 810 trains, with union members refusing to work on the fleet until faults involving air conditioning, doors, and toilets are resolved.

EMR has advised passengers to make only essential journeys to and from London, warning of extreme congestion and potential queuing at London St Pancras, Sheffield, and Nottingham. The company stated it has met with the union six times to resolve the issue, but the RMT continues to demand that faulty trains be removed from service.

Travel disruptions are compounded by engineering work on the East Coast Main Line. Network Rail is introducing digital in-cab signalling between Welwyn and Hitchin as part of the £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme. Consequently, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) will suspend services between London King’s Cross and Peterborough on Sunday, with passengers directed toward Thameslink services or replacement buses. The Met Office has further warned that unsettled weather, including heavy rain and thunderstorms, may impact the bank holiday weekend.
