UK Government Extends 16-17 Saver Railcard Validity to One Year

The Department for Transport announced that starting August 17, the 16-17 Saver railcard will remain valid for a full 12 months from the date of purchase, regardless of when the holder turns 18. Under previous rules, these railcards expired on the passenger's 18th birthday, a policy the department noted left over 70,000 students annually an average of £175 worse off than their peers.

The 16-17 Saver railcard costs £35 per year and provides a 50% discount on most fares, offering a higher discount than the 16-25 Railcard, which provides one-third off. Because 17-year-olds can now purchase the card up until the day before their 18th birthday, some users may maintain half-price fares until they are nearly 19.

Rail minister Lord Hendy described the update as a common sense change intended to support young people pursuing further education or entering the job market. This policy shift follows a separate government commitment to reduce the cap on most single bus fares in England from £3 to £2 next year. Representatives from the Rail Delivery Group and the National Union of Students welcomed the move, citing its importance for young people reliant on trains for work and training.
