Laos Sets 30 Percent Electric Vehicle Target for 2030

The Government of Laos aims for electric vehicles to comprise 30 percent of all vehicles by 2030 to cut fuel imports and use domestic power.

The Government of Laos has established a national target for electric vehicles to account for at least 30 percent of all vehicles by 2030. This initiative seeks to reduce the country's reliance on expensive fuel imports by leveraging domestic electricity resources. To achieve this, the government aims to deploy approximately 222,784 four-wheeled electric vehicles and 1,307 charging stations across the country.

Recent data indicates rapid growth in the sector. In the first eight months of 2026, new-energy vehicles represented 29.7 percent of total vehicle imports, with fully electric vehicle imports increasing 107 percent year on year.

To sustain this momentum, the state is implementing a series of financial and structural measures. These include transitioning official government fleets to electric models, issuing green bonds to fund infrastructure, and encouraging banks to provide preferential loan rates. Additionally, the state-run utility Électricité du Laos is evaluating a 10 percent electricity rate reduction for charging stations. To support the long-term ecosystem, the Ministry of Education and Sports has introduced a vocational training curriculum specifically for electric vehicle repair to develop a skilled maintenance workforce.
