Federal High Court Strikes Out Rotimi Amaechi's ADC Suit
Rotimi Amaechi withdrew a legal challenge against Atiku Abubakar's ADC nomination after being selected as Abubakar's running mate for the 2027 general elections.
The Federal High Court in Abuja struck out a pre-election lawsuit filed by Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State, against the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Amaechi had challenged the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party's presidential candidate, alleging that the May 25 presidential primary breached the Electoral Act of 2026 and internal party guidelines by failing to use a membership register for accreditation.
Amaechi sought to nullify the primary results and force the party to conduct a new election. However, the legal dispute ended when Amaechi's counsel, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, moved a motion to withdraw the case, stating that the parties had settled their differences.
The resolution followed a political agreement in which Atiku Abubakar selected Amaechi, who had placed second in the primary, to serve as his running mate for the 2027 general elections. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court subsequently ordered the suit to be struck out.
