China Tests ICBM Using Third-Generation Nuclear Submarines
The People's Liberation Army test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean using third-generation nuclear submarines for the first time.
The People's Liberation Army test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean in July using third-generation nuclear submarines. The announcement, released by the Xinhua News Agency, marks the first time Beijing has confirmed the deployment of its most advanced submarines for such a test.
Previous intercontinental ballistic missile tests conducted by China in the Pacific were land-based. This latest operation demonstrates the sea-based component of China's nuclear triad. While the government did not disclose the specific missile or submarine models, the revelation follows satellite imagery showing the construction of new submarine types at the Huludao and Jiangnan shipyards.
The test has drawn criticism from Japan and Australia. The Xinhua News Agency stated that the Changzheng series of nuclear submarines have reached the third generation and successfully organized the test launch of a submarine-launched strategic missile.
