Aldi Invests £26 Million in UK Store Solar Panels

Aldi UK is investing £26 million to install solar panels across hundreds of stores by 2031 while expanding its physical footprint before Christmas.

Aldi UK is investing £17.5 million to install solar panels at 230 additional stores between 2027 and 2031. This new initiative expands an existing £8.4 million program targeting 100 stores in 2025 and 2026, bringing the total solar investment to approximately £26 million. The company expects more than 500 stores to be equipped with solar panels by the end of 2026, with each installation capable of providing up to 30% of a store's annual energy requirements.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate, stated that the investment aims to reduce reliance on the national grid and make stores more sustainable. He noted that the company has plenty of roof space and intends for solar power to become a normal part of store operations over the coming years.

Alongside these sustainability efforts, the retailer is expanding its physical presence across England, Scotland, and Wales. Aldi plans to open 24 new branches and relocate three existing sites before Christmas. This expansion is part of a larger investment in the UK estate this year, which includes over £300 million for upgrading and extending existing stores as the company pursues a long-term goal of operating 1,500 stores in the United Kingdom.
