New York Polls Show Strong Opposition to DSA Movement

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have expanded to over 120,000 members following the 2024 election victories of Donald Trump. The movement has secured primary wins in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Michigan, and its influence is highlighted by the 2025 election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York City. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has also emerged as a favorable presidential aspirant in national and New Hampshire polls.

Despite these gains, recent polling indicates significant resistance. A Siena University poll of New York voters found that 47% view the DSA unfavorably, with support concentrated among younger and low-income residents in New York City. A separate survey of 811 likely gubernatorial voters revealed deeper disapproval among Jewish New Yorkers, with 75% opposing the DSA and 66% opposing Mayor Mamdani.

The movement faces ongoing friction with the Democratic mainstream and Republican critics. Senator Ted Cruz has condemned the group's proposals to defund the police and abolish the Senate. While progressive candidates like Abdul El-Sayed have won primaries in Michigan, the DSA has also suffered recent primary losses in the state.
