Bursa Malaysia Index Falls Amid AI and Oil Concerns

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI closed 1.11 per cent lower on September 15 as investors reacted to AI safety warnings and rising oil prices.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI closed 1.11 per cent lower at 1,679.21 points on September 15, 2026. The index opened with a 6.74-point drop to 1,691.27, eventually ending the day with 780 losers outweighing 355 gainers.

Market sentiment was dampened by rising oil prices, which approached US$107 per barrel after a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf nations regarding the Strait of Hormuz was abruptly postponed. Investors also reacted to warnings from Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, who urged the AI industry to slow its development pace to allow safety measures and oversight to catch up. Amodei cautioned that a reassessment of the investment cycle in chips, data centers, and infrastructure could delay returns and negatively impact valuations.

Additional pressure came from global market weakness and anticipation of the Federal Open Market Committee's interest rate decision. While most sectors declined, the Energy Index saw gains. Analysts noted the index is approaching oversold territory, which may trigger bargain hunting in blue-chip stocks. The local bourse will remain closed on September 16 for the Malaysia Day public holiday.
